HCSB 2nd Edition Ephesians Review

I read through Ephesians and highlighted as best as I could every change that I encountered.  I do hope that I did not miss any, and I also hope this gives you a glance as to some of the changes that are in place.  I might do another small epistles.

Chapter One

Chapter One

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God’s will: To the saints and believers in Christ Jesus at Ephesus.

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God’s will: To the faithful saints in Christ Jesus at Ephesus.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, in Christ;

3 Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens.

7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace

7 We have redemption in Him through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace

11 In Him we were also made His inheritance, predestined according to the purpose of the One who works out everything in agreement with the decision of His will,

11 We have also received an inheritance in Him, predestined according to the purpose of the One who works out everything in agreement with the decision of His will,

13 In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation—in Him when you believed—were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.

13 When you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed in Him, you were also sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.

18 [I pray] that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the glorious riches of His inheritance among the saints,

18 [I pray] that the perception of your mind may be enlightened so you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the glorious riches of His inheritance among the saints,

11 So then, remember that at one time you were Gentiles in the flesh—called “the uncircumcised” by those called “the circumcised,” done by hand in the flesh.

11 So then, remember that at one time you were Gentiles in the flesh—called “the uncircumcised” by those called “the circumcised,” [which is done] in the flesh by human hands.

12 At that time you were without the Messiah, excluded from the citizenship of Israel, and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, with no hope and without God in the world.

12 At that time you were without the Messiah, excluded from the citizenship of Israel, and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.

21 The whole building is being fitted together in Him and is growing into a holy sanctuary in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for God’s dwelling in the Spirit.

21 The whole building, being put together by Him, grows into a holy sanctuary in the Lord. 22 You also are being built together for God’s dwelling in the Spirit.
Chapter Three Chapter Three

8 This grace was given to me—the least of all the saints!—to proclaim to the Gentiles the incalculable riches of the Messiah,

8 This grace was given to me—the least of all the saints [EXCALMATION POINT REMOVED]—to proclaim to the Gentiles the incalculable riches of the Messiah,

11 This is according to the purpose of the ages, which He made in the Messiah, Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness, access, and confidence through faith in Him.

11 This is according to His eternal purpose accomplished in the Messiah, Jesus our Lord. 12 In Him we have boldness and confident access through faith in Him.

14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father

14 For this reason I kneel before the Father

20 Now to Him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in you

20 Now to Him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think [DASHED REMOVED] according to the power that works in us

10 The One who descended is the same as the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.

10 The One who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.

22 you took off your former way of life, the old man that is corrupted by deceitful desires;

22 You took off , your former way of life, the old self , that is corrupted by deceitful desires;

24 you put on the new man, the one created according to God’s [likeness] in righteousness and purity of the truth.

24 you put on , the new self, the one created according to God’s [likeness] in righteousness and purity of the truth.

29 No rotten talk should come from your mouth, but only what is good for the building up of someone in need, in order to give grace to those who hear. 30 And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit, who sealed you for the day of redemption. 31 All bitterness, anger and wrath, insult and slander must be removed from you, along with all wickedness.

29 No foul language is to come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need, so that it gives grace to those who hear. 30 And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit. 1. I found a comment somewhere that mentioned a HCSB study bible in the works for this update. Hopefully it will be out before christmas 2009. I can’t remember the exact link to the comment, but I think it might have been at Rick’s blog: This Lamp.

  4. I just purchased the entire 2nd Edition of the CSB on Bible Explorer. It is the only place (so far) that you can purchase it in electronic format. I have been anxiously anticipating this new edition as the HCSB has become my Bible of choice – “bonded” as they say. They have also changed the word “deluge” in Genesis back to “flood”. Blessings.

  5. Thank you for your fine comparison. I am very pleased with the changes. I am currently reading the ESV and HCSB translations. The HCSB has become my favorite translation. I love the numerous translation aids, the natural English and the optimal equivalence method of translation (termed “mediating” elsewhere). I also appreciate the fact that the HCSB has not received the politically correct sanitization that the NIV’s translators imposed on the TNIV.

    I would be interested in the 2nd edition’s translation of Isaiah 53. The 1st edition had a couple of problems in this important chapter. Thanks again.

  6. Brian,

    I have been recently reading the TNIV, and I do favor it over the HCSB, but I also favor the HCSB over the ESV. I have also been reading the NLT and find that to be an excellent translation as well. We are so blessed to have this many fine translations at our disposal.

  7. Nathan, has any generation before us ever had so much access to God’s word as we do? How can we complain? There is so much to gain from all of the translations that are available.
